I use a Starcraft 21‘ Viper that was specially designed for professional Walleye tournament Great Lakes fishing conditions – the very same applications I consider important for deep lake striper fishing.
Built to handle big water-while providing the bass boat type speed necessary to travel great distances, the Viper is powered by a Mercury 250 HP Pro XS racing engine. The boat can top 50+ MPH with a full load of five people and equipment.
The combination of safety in big water and speed provide a unique platform for a lake like San Luis where wind and big waves can be an issue most fishing boats struggle to overcome. The boat also features a full windshield and deep sides-providing protection from waves and cold weather!
The perfect fishing group for the cockpit area is 2 anglers and the captain but depending on the size of the anglers it’s possible to fish 3 to 4 people in addition to the captain.
The Viper is also setup with a Merc 9.9 HP kicker motor that is remotely run and started, providing exact trolling speeds and low noise signatures.
Navigation, NAV maps, and GPS plotting as well as tracking and waypoint markings are all done by the Humminbird 997 side-scanning sonar. Visiting the best fishing holes we’ve discovered, or trolling a submerged island far from the shore, this unit is up to the task and key to our success in finding and fishing these areas.
Outfitted with automatic Scotty downriggers mounted on Bert’s Tackle mounting plates, trolling and downrigging setups are simple to change or adapt to whatever use you’re wanting to apply them.
I usually have my custom Bimini top attached to the
boat so hot weather and bright sunshine are no problem for my guests
